Hunan Sees Strong Tourism Growth in 2017

The Hunan Provincial Statistics Bureau announced on February 24 that, the added value of Hunan’s tourism industry and its related industry in 2017 reached 203.621 billion CNY, up 15.67% over the previous year (when not considering price factors). This is the first time the figure reached over 200 billion CNY.

Hunan’s tourism and its related sectors have maintained an average annual growth of 12.77% since 2012. The proportion of their added value in Hunan’s GDP has risen from 5.04% to 5.89%.

Statistics show that as of the end of 2017, the added value of tourism and its related sectors in eight cities each exceeded 10 billion CNY, namely Changsha (its added value of tourism exceeded 50 billion CNY), Zhuzhou, Xiangtan, Hengyang, Yueyang, Changde, Zhangjiajie and Chenzhou.

Zhangjiajie City and Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture contributed the most to Hunan’s economy. The proportion of the added value of their tourism and the related sectors accounted for 32.16% and 15.45% of the provincial GDP respectively, ranking the first two places in the province.

In 2017, the added value generated from the six tourism elements of eating, lodging, transporting, sightseeing, shopping, and entertainment reached 40.036 billion CNY, 18.81 billion CNY, 54.626 billion CNY, 14.511 billion CNY, 25.008 billion CNY, and 13.099 billion CNY respectively. The proportion of sightseeing and transporting in the total output has risen 2.52 and 1.61 percentage points respectively over the same period last year. It indicated that tourism consumption structure has been upgraded to some extent.
